| | | | AYLL - Antioch Baseball and Softball: 2012 Baseball Bat Rules!!! | | | by AYLL posted 01/15/2012
Hello Baseball Parents and Players,
For safety reasons, we have implemented new Baseball Bat Rules for the 2012 Spring Season. Please read below for details and the reasoning behind the changes of the Baseball Bat Rules:
What is BPF & BBCOR?
BPF stands for Bat Performance Factor. It is a measurement of how a ball “rebounds” off the bat, compared to a ball thrown at a stone wall. We are using a BPF of 1.15 in ages 14 & younger. All baseball bats for this age group must have the 1.15 BPF stamp (see image below). This means the bat has a “rebound” of 15% faster than a ball thrown at a stone wall.
BBCOR stands for Batted Ball Coefficient of Restitution. Basically BBCOR measures how much energy the ball loses at contact with the bat. The NCAA & NFHS want metal & composite bats to perform more like wood bats, so they have adopted this standard.
BPF is associated with YOUTH BATS ONLY. The BBCOR standard is for Adult (drop -3) bats ONLY. The drop in the bat is the difference between the length and weight. For example, when someone says they are looking for a drop -3, 32” length bat, you know the weight is 29 oz. Over the past years bat manufacturers have developed bats that increased the risk for injury by making bats that increased their trampoline effect the more a player used the bat. Batted baseballs would come off the bats at unsafe speeds.
Now for 2012, the bat rule changes aim at reducing the hit speed off a bat to a level that cannot be exceeded during the life of the bat. Games in 2012 will have lower scores and batted ball injuries will be reduced.
Please note, if your child is playing In-House baseball, each In-House team within our league will have 1.15 BPF baseball bats available for your child to use. Therefore, parents are not required to purchase a 1.15 BPF baseball bat for their child. However, please follow the guidelines above and below if you choose to purchase a baseball bat for your child:
‘A’ Ball, AA Baseball, and AAA Baseball
The baseball bat shall not be more than thirty-three (33) inches in length nor more than two and one-quarter (2 1/4) inches in diameter. No drop restrictions.
Major Baseball
The baseball bat shall not be more than thirty-three (33) inches in length nor more than two and five-eights (2 5/8) inches in diameter. No drop restrictions.
